Yesterday Shreedhar Ganapathy, Project GlassFish community manager, was kind enough to point me to the SPECjAppServer2004 results that Sun Microsystems put together using an open source software stack consisting of:
- Sun Java Systems Application Server 9.0 Platform Edition a.k.a. GlassFish
- Jakarta Tomcat 5.5.16
- Connector/J 3.1.13
- MySQL 5.0.20
All of which were running in a Java 5 runtime environment on a 4 core SunFire X4100 server on top of Solaris 10. I don't know how I missed these numbers while I gathering information about the current status of GlassFish, but they're actually quite impressive. Tom Daly over at Sun posted some highlights of the tests on his blog back in May after the tests results were released. These numbers are as good a proof of the 'enterprise readiness' of open source software as any commentary I can provide so I'll end it here and let them do the talking.
As SOA moves from the domain of the early adopter/industry leaders into the mainstream, open source is going to increasingly be employed therein as both a cost effective replacement for proprietary products as well as a driver of flexible, open, standards-based components which aid security from an SOA perspective.
