IDC provides open source strategy

IDC is launching a strategy group for monetizing open source. The group, called the Open Source Software Business Models (OSBM) is to be lead by Matthew Lawton, who is responsible for examining "...the various business models that companies are using to make money from open source software, and the implications these models have on the software industry." (from the IDC website).

I, for one, am glad to see the larger analyst houses starting to directly channel their resources towards the open source software industry. Their involvement certainly doesn't make or break the progress made so far by the open source community, but it does validate it to an extent. IDC's service also has the potential to help highlight ways in which to generate revenue through open source business models. We provide the same sort of services at Entiva Group so I know first hand that monetizing open source is by no means a simple subject/task. However, IDC has the resources and reach to be successful so I wish them good fortune with the endeavor.
