Interview with OpenLogic CTO Rod Cope
The following interview with OpenLogic CTO Rod Cope is taken from Entiva Group's analyst report for the week of 2006/04/10 which can be viewed in its entirety here (PDF file).
Q: Where/how does OpenLogic Enterprise fit into
the enterprise software ecosystem?
Rod: OpenLogic Enterprise (formerly BlueGlue) is typically used on
developer workstations to complement or replace traditional software
development tools from companies like Borland and IBM. In many cases, however,
it is also used on development, QA, and production servers to get them up and
running quickly and to keep them maintained with critical security patches and
bug fixes. It's easy for companies to integrate OpenLogic Enterprise into
their existing software distribution solution.
Q: What business value does OpenLogic bring to
the table at the current moment?
Rod: Our software solution,
OpenLogic Enterprise, and our support services help customers maximize the
returns from open source technologies. OpenLogic:
- Enables companies to easily configure and deploy their own stacks composed of certified open source solutions as well as their own commercial or homegrown software.
- Increases the productivity of developers and IT staff using open source solutions by providing software tools to automate the installation, configuration, integration, testing and maintenance of open source.
- Reduces legal and compliance risks associated with open source by providing companies with capabilities to define, manage and enforce open source policies.
- Provides consolidated technical support across 150 open source products to ensure enterprise-class reliability.
Q: Are only "stable" or main
branches/releases of open source products supported by OpenLogic Enterprise? Is
it possible to use OpenLogic Enterprise to deploy alpha/beta versions?
Rod: OpenLogic Enterprise is
extensible through a Custom Package Manager GUI, which means customers can
easily add alpha and beta versions of open source products if they wish.
Q: How does OpenLogic Enterprise address the
various issues related to compliance in terms of
open source software?
Rod: OpenLogic Enterprise enables an enterprise to define and enforce an open source policy. In addition, OpenLogic Enterprise includes a library of 150+ open source products that have undergone a rigorous certification process - providing a trusted source for open source solutions.
Q: Do customers miss out on anything because
OpenLogic Enterprise is closed source as opposed to open source?
Q: What is the Eclipse Starter Edition?
Rod: The Eclipse Starter Edition is
a great way for developers to get started with our solutions. It includes
many of the same capabilities and the same expert knowledgebase as the full
version of OpenLogic Enterprise, but only allows users to install Eclipse and
up to 27 Eclipse plug-ins. The Starter Edition does not include the Custom
Package Manager (extensibility module).
Q: Would you describe OpenLogic Enterprise as a developer productivity tool or should it be classified as something else?
Rod: OpenLogic Enterprise should be
looked as a complete solution to manage open source in the enterprise. It
includes tools for developer productivity as well as features that give the
enterprise the ability to manage open source deployments.
Q: Does OpenLogic cultivate relationships with open source communities and/or
companies? If so, how does this help in terms of developing OpenLogic
Enterprise?
Rod: Yes, we work with many open
source communities and companies. On the community side, we've found and
fixed bugs and submitted patches to many open source projects over the past 13
years. We also have partnerships with companies such as MySQL, BlackDuck,
Virtuas, and others. All of these relationships help us get the inside
track on developments in the open source world, which in turn keeps our
knowledge base up-to date and provides better value to our customers.
When we have special support needs either internally or for a customer, our
contacts in the various open source communities and in our partner companies
provide us rapid access to deep expertise.
Q: What are five things potential customers should know about OpenLogic Enterprise?
Rod:
- OpenLogic Enterprise includes a certified library of 150+ open source products. This library provides companies with a trusted source for open source. OpenLogic enables customers to securely update their certified library with new security patches and releases.
- OpenLogic Enterprise enforces customer policies around open source usage, including restrictions on license types.
- OpenLogic Enterprise installs, configures, integrates, deploys, and tests your combination of open source, proprietary, and commercial software in minutes while automatically handling interactions and resolving conflicts.
- OpenLogic Enterprise includes an expert knowledgebase to help get developers productive quickly. It gives customers all the information they need to know about open source products, licenses, and dependencies. It also includes exclusive documentation and sample applications with source code.
- OpenLogic Enterprise works, looks, and feels the same on Windows and Linux. It easily supports development on Windows and deployment on Linux.
Q: What types of features are scheduled to be made available with forthcoming
OpenLogic Enterprise releases?
Rod:
- We will continue to expand the open source projects that are included in our certified library.
- We will include additional features that allow enterprises to define open source policies and manage their open source usage.
- We will continue to focus on developer productivity by making it easier to install and integrate open source stacks.
